Biography:
I am a 29 year old Firefighter originally from Glasgow and now stay in Livingston. Being a Firefighter is a highly physical job and it is important to be physically and mentally prepared for any situation. I love my job as no day is ever the same and it motivates me to be in the best possible condition I can be. I have always been a very active person and played football and volleyball throughout my time at School and University. It was at Uni that I also first discovered the gym and a passion for weightlifting. I think what interested me in weight training was that it’s a sport that involves you constantly learning, be it from others you train with, materials you read and most importantly your own personal experience. Even after 9 years of training I am still learning every day and loving every minute of it! I have also worked in numerous gyms and health clubs over the past 7 years as I love working in the gym environment. Helping people to achieve their health and fitness goals and motivating them to do what they never thought possible is one of the greatest feelings in the world.

Tell us about yourself and the sport you compete in:
After years of training I have only recently began competing in Natural Bodybuilding last year. This is a very competitive sport and the standard of competitor is immense! Which means you can guarantee that you will be competing against the best possible physiques in the UK. Bodybuilding is a huge commitment and the level of dedication required to be the best you can be is one of the hardest things I have ever experienced. The flip side to this is that the feeling of achievement you feel when you’re on stage after months of pain and heartache is second to none and is what keeps me motivated to this day.
How did you become involved in your sport?
I went to watch my first show in 2010 and that was me hooked, the crowd, the atmosphere and the sense of achievement I could see that the competitors felt was something that I wanted to experience for myself. So I began training hard and set myself a goal of achieving a top 3 place at the Scottish Qualifiers in a year’s time. My hard work and commitment paid off with me achieving 1st place in the Heavyweight category and then to be declared overall Mr Scotland. 3 months later I then went onto win 1st place at the British finals and travelled as part of the British Team to compete in the States. This year I have recently won the Heavyweight title at the UK Championships and am now preparing to travel to Atlantic City to compete in the World Finals.
What does your weekly training programme consist of?
I train 7 days a week and on occasions twice a day! I know for many people this would be excessive but many of my sessions I class as active recovery workouts. These involve light weights, stretching, gentle cardio, etc and will generally be no longer than half an hour. My current regime is as follows:

Mon – Hamstrings, Calfs & Abs
Tues – Chest & Biceps
Wed – Back & Triceps
Thurs – Quads, Calfs & Abs
Friday – Shoulders
Sat – Arms & Abs
Sun – Gentle Cardio & Stretching
